Every once in a while you discover something that not too many people know about, and you sort of want to keep it a secret. An example of this is the Government Surplus Online Auction. A couple years ago, I happened upon the website as I was doing some work for an employee of the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN). She informed me that she worked for the online auction that the DSBN used to sell off their used or excess equipment. These included desks, computers, chairs and chalkboards, but also things like lawn mowers, trucks and portable classrooms. I was very curious, and began to frequent the site.

Wow!

Not only were there lots of items, but the prices that they sold for were very reasonable. Over the years, this has been the place online that I check into once every couple weeks or so, just to see what is online. I have made a good number of purchases at the site, including office furniture, shelving, and even chairs and tables that have seen lots of use in our house.

Over time, the DSBN recognized what they had, and sent word across the province that any government agency could become a member and sell their own items through this website. At that point it was renamed the Government Surplus Online Auction. A couple years ago, my wife and I took a scenic drive down to St. Thomas to pick up furniture I had bought from a Seniors’ Home there. It was a great day spent together, without any time deadlines, and in the end we came home with a number of good tables and chairs, all very inexpensive.

Well, I believe that it is time to let the cat out of the bag, and let people know about how to find this site. Perhaps others now will enjoy bidding and buying surplus items ranging from ink to TVs, from tricycles to dump trucks, from a child’s desk to a full sized office reception desk. Basically anything a government agency could have that they no longer need. No, there are no used politicians available, but that is a good thing, right?
